Mercedes Schlapp, the White House strategist for communications, has a challenging task. She has to deal with the president, who acts as his own communication director and a myriad of legal disputes which can disrupt the administration's messaging strategy and a number of Cabinet secretaries embroiled in their own disputes. Yet, through all of it Schlapp remains focused on the mission that she has been assigned, and is working closely with the White House's policy and legislative affairs departments and policy shops, as well in the larger communication operation for policy-related rollouts. So far, her focus is on topics like the safety of schools, opioids, infrastructure, trade and. As of now, Schlapp does not deal too much with journalists. The media spotlight was on her in the wake of being announced as the candidate to succeed Hope Hicks, the communications director. Mercedes Schlapp does not have an easy job as White House strategic communication adviser. Mercedes Schlapp is faced with an administration that is roiled by a variety of problems, such as the president's role as his own director of communications and Cabinet Secretaries involved in controversies of their own. Schlapp has never strayed from her goals, and she was closely involved to work closely with White House policy and political teams. Her focus so far has been on issues like school safety, opioids, infrastructure and trade. Schlapp hasn't dealt with reporters frequently in her current job. But, back in March, she was mentioned as a person who could succeed Hope Hicks at the Communications Director job. It's been a nasty fight. Schlapp's close ally, Tony Sayegh as well as another candidate for the position who is also named Tony have been fighting on the news. Schlapp called Sayegh after that the Washington Examiner printed a bad story on him.
